14th color is down. i forgot to upload 13, but it wasnt all that exciting. this is the darkest color before the black.

test printing and color mixing, as the 14th color needs to be blend well with the final black. cant be too light otherwise itll be too rough of an edge, cant be too dark, or all the detail will dissapear. so we spent some time with it.

this is the press were working on. a saturn. its sort of fancy despite being covered in ink.

andy skating, for your photoshopping pleasure.

and a panoramic i made of the shop.

12!
overprinting lots of reddish purples. blacks a comin...itll tie the whole room together.

what percentage of late night kinkos patrons are either crazy old homeless women doodling on padded envelopes eating peanut butter cups with one hand and clutching a pile of $1 bills in the other, male prostitutes checking their match.com accounts and making craigslist posts while wearing platform shoes, or meth addict women reading self help books? the answer is shocking.

11th color is done. there was alot of debate and troubleshooting right before this color was approved that maybe an earlier color wasnt quite right, and we explored options of overprinting that layer again very transparent to push out that color a tad bit more. eventually that idea was scrapped and our plan involves printing all the way to 14, before the black, and and seeing what we think then. however, we did make the decision to do a gloss varnish over the final image, which should make everything blend and pop a bit more.
as yes, were still printing the pink ones. why? because its going to look fun.

upon going outside, we discovered a nearby building was very much on fire. i forget what was so funny, but im pretty sure it involved three old guys across the street trying to smoke weed secretly amist all the commotion. no word on whats actually on fire, but we told andy it was his bank and all his money was on fire.

10th color is down. a pretty important layer, being the flood for the bottom of the print as well as another accent for the top. things are moving pretty quickly today. i skipped posting a picture of 9 because it wasnt very exciting. also i forgot...

snacks and mitch.

8 is down. its really subtle, just a step darker of the purple from layer 6. its pretty sparse, but its a color that acts as a bridge between two others, so i needs to be there for the sake of pacing. but subtle accent colors are always a good idea.
two more days to go. will we finish? not sure.
im exhausted today. i was up till 4am working on an Alamo poster and watching comcast on-demand free movies. there is some truely terrible stuff in there.
ps. why didnt anyone tell me i had written "thursday" for every entry so far?

7th color. at this point were sort of noticing the print is sort of taking the reigns. only way i can describe it. inks arent opaque, and if believe they are youre going to get yourself into trouble with complex seperations involving lots of layering. you have to mix colors so that when theyre printed and theyve dried and theyve overlaid their color on top of the color beneath, that THAT color, which is usually worlds apart than the ink you poured on the screen, is what you want. as i mentioned before, theres sort of three waves of color going on here. seafoams into traditional blues into purples then black. so as much as we want to steer it towards blues durring these middle colors, its taking the colors and bringing them either towards seafoams or towards purple. its kind of resisting us by blending so much. so were sitting there looking at it and im just realising that it looks fantastic with the direction its going and we really shouldnt fight it, the inks are going to do what theyre going to do and if it wants more greens and purples, well so be it. its sort of an intense looking at the moment. were going to do our best to counter these middle colors with a traditional darker blue about 2 colors from now, which will make everything really pop. i dunno, im excited. i sort of wish all of you reading this could all be here to see this thing move along, because it looks so much better in person, but the shop would get really crowded with that amount of people. fire marshalls would get called. it would be bad.
thats the last color for today. tomorrows sunday, not sure whats happening then.

6th color is down. sort of a light muted purple overprint to accent color 8 and 9 eventually.

planning out the next wave of colors. i ended up breaking out some paper clips because pantone colorswatch books are pretty easy to get lost in. were venturing into some slight purples here, but the really red-based-purple is to come.

5th color. we had a hard time mixing the 5th color and getting it to be a good match to the color on my screen AND for it to be an appropriate step up from the 4th, but after realising that the 4th color printed a bit lighter that whats in my file, it meant we had to adjust it on the screen and everything sort of sorted itself out.

dieselfuel had a kozik show, and then had a stainboy show, and this is how they advertise. everyone thinks its real grafitti.
Virgils Super Fuzz, my brilliant combination of micro brew rootbeer and vintage fuzz effects pedals. look for it at your local grunge-era grocers soon.

4th color is down. it ended up around 70% extender base instead of a solid color. its hard to keep things bright when printed over a muted blue. but were moving along.

a bunch of rad artists are showing up to install the show tonight at dieselfuel. mike suftin (of the latest pinback album, magic the gathering fame), david d'angela (of totally ruling everything fame), and the esteemed mouse.

so we made a new squeegee. this special fancy kind has a stiffer inner core but a softer outer layer, so itll hold up and be stiff for the detail, but will still move alot of ink. so thats all taken care of now.

this is andy telling a telemarketter that he cut himself and theres blood everywhere.

so the third color is down properly.. the next layer will be really telling because thats when we start in on the run of darker blues. im excited for that one.

also i think i might change the title of the print. its been sort of bothering me for some time. we'll see.

we had to bail on finishing up the third color last night due to an issue of the super fine details filling in in the screen. it being the brightest color on the print and sort of a focal point, making sure it was perfect was important. so after alot of back and forth trials, we abandoned it for the night. the issue was the squeegee was too hard, which is good for detail because its stiff and crisp, but not for pushing alot of ink through. and you need a good amount of bright ink to not fade too much over a darker color.

just for giggles.

so getting the first color right took some time. there was alot of issues where it wasnt bright enough, but any white added to the ink was muting it too much. eventually this was solved by adding extender base to the ink, which lets more of the white paper show through which in turn makes it brighter. finally we dialed it in.

first color down.

andy orders pizza via dominos 'pizza tracker'. such a thing truely exists. i should note, that in my last print process i mentioned a local pizza place named Hammys that i completely fell in love with. so apparently they stopped doing lunch orders. so i am bummed. Hammys, youve really let me down. your pizza is amazing and needs to be shared with the world, but instead, im eating dominos. shaame.

benn takes a halfpipe break. yes, theres a halfpipe in the shop. yes, i briefly attempted to ride it. no, that did not go well.

so im starting a new print today at dieselfuel in portland. always a joy to be here. some of you might remember this painting from my show at wootini earlier in the year, so im happy to revisit it and rework some minor things (you may notice the girl is slightly shorter and some areas are punched out slightly). so after getting into portland late last night after driving in from the seattle flatstock, i sat down with this and pulled a near-all nighter working on the seperations, which i finished around 2pm today. theyre off to the epson to print out, that will take most of the rest of the day.

benn and i started mixing initial colors. the first layer is a large flood which sort of sets the overall direction of color flow for the whole print. were starting with sort of muted seafoam greens for the flood and the horizon, then into pretty traditional blues, into some magneta/purples, and then blacks. you gotta pace colors properly or youll end up sort of in a corner.

andy is sleepy.
